The standard

How a listing is checked, labelled and corrected

This is the standard the ✓ badge rests on, written so it can be checked rather than believed. Every rule below is one the software enforces — the badge is computed from the record rather than switched on by hand, and the checks that catch a broken claim run before the site can be deployed. Where we do not check something, this page says so plainly.

1. What “verified” means here

Verification applies to business listings only. It is a desk check against published sources — not an audit, not an inspection, and not a visit. Before a business listing is published, a person checks three things:

  • Identity — the business genuinely exists and trades under the listed name.
  • Contact — the phone, email and website on the listing belong to that business.
  • Location — it operates from the Kochi or Ernakulam locality shown.

What keeps the badge on afterwards

A human check is a memory, and memories drift. So the badge itself is gated on evidence that is still on the record today. A listing displays it only while it has both:

  • a public presence the business publishes itself — its own website, or an official account it runs. The gate is that an independent page naming the business exists at all, not which platform hosts it, which is how a 1997 Fort Kochi café that lost its domain still qualifies on a platform-verified account whose address matches its listing.
  • at least one direct route to reach it — a phone number, an email address or a street address. A record nobody can reach is a record nobody can re-check, so it stays listed without the badge rather than borrowing a claim we cannot stand behind today.

A listing can also be put on hold by hand, which withdraws the badge while leaving the page up. 47 of the 51 business listings carry the badge right now; 4 do not.

Why that is mechanical, not editorial

The flag is derived, never stored: it is recomputed from each record every time the site is built, so there is no field anyone can tick to grant a badge, and none to forget to untick when the evidence goes. On top of that, a data check runs before the build and refuses to let the site compile if any of these is true:

  • a badged listing holds no phone, no email and no address;
  • a public institution carries the ✓ badge;
  • an editorial award sits on a listing that is not badged;
  • two listings share a phone number, an email inbox or a website — the test that catches one organisation entered twice;
  • a website field is not a URL a browser can open, or coordinates fall outside Kochi.

Each of those checks exists because the defect it catches actually shipped — including a period when every listing on the site displayed the badge by default, public institutions included. The guard is the apology.

2. What the badge is not

  • Not an endorsement. It says we could confirm who this business is and where to find it. It says nothing about whether you should hire them.
  • Not a rating. This site publishes no stars, no scores and no review counts, and emits no rating data to search engines — because we have no reviews to average, and inventing them would be fraud dressed as markup.
  • Not an inspection. Nobody visits the premises. For a listing we compiled ourselves, no registration documents are examined at all.
  • Not a guarantee of quality, price, availability, licensing or conduct. Confirm anything that matters directly with the business.
  • Not for sale. Placement and prominence can be paid for and are disclosed where they appear; the badge, the organic ordering and the editorial awards cannot be bought at any price.
  • Not permanent. It follows the evidence. When the evidence goes, so does the badge — automatically, at the next build.

3. Public institutions are a different thing entirely

249 of the 300 entries are public bodies — government offices, hospitals, police stations, transport hubs, utilities and colleges. Nobody at those institutions asked to be listed and nobody there vouched for the page. They are compiled from published public sources as a service to residents, and the register keeps the source URLs each entry was built from on file with it.

  • They carry a neutral 🏛️ Public Institution label and are never eligible for the ✓ badge — the code treats an institution holding it as a build failure, not a mistake to fix later.
  • They are never eligible for any editorial award.
  • Every institution page states, above the fold, that it is not the official website of that body and that we are not affiliated with, endorsed by or authorised by it or by any government.
  • Each shows the month it was last checked against public sources, alongside an accuracy notice. Every healthcare, police and fire listing — public or private — additionally carries the 112 and 108 emergency numbers, because a directory page is not something to rely on in a crisis, and every bank and finance listing carries a fraud warning naming the 1930 cybercrime helpline.

4. Editorial awards, and what separates them from verification

Verification is a factual check. The awards are opinions, and they are labelled as opinions.

  • 🏆 Gold List (8) and ✦ Editor’s Choice (7) are in-house editorial judgments, deliberately scarce and never for sale. Both are gated on the badge: a listing that loses verification loses the award on every page that renders it, and the build fails rather than ship the contradiction.
  • ⌂ Heritage (11) is arithmetic, not judgment — a founding year of 1971 or earlier. It claims nothing we checked beyond the date, which is why an old business we cannot verify still keeps it.

There is no nomination form, and a business that pays for nothing can hold every award on this site.

5. If you own the business: claiming and documents

Everything above describes a listing we compiled. An owner can instead claim a listing through the provider portal, which is the only route where documents are involved. There is exactly one verification tier today — the ✓ check described on this page. Nothing deeper is on offer: no premium badge, no live video check, nothing to apply for beyond this.

A claim asks for:

  • Business registration — any one of a GST certificate, Udyam/MSME registration or a Kerala Shops & Establishment licence. Freelancers and individual service providers give proof of work instead — a portfolio, three recent invoices or an active professional profile.
  • Owner identity proof — PAN, passport, driving licence or voter ID. We do not ask for Aadhaar.
  • Business address proof — a recent utility bill, rent agreement or bank statement showing the listed address.
  • A category licence where the category is regulated — FSSAI for food, clinical establishment or practitioner registration for healthcare, K-RERA for real estate.

Documents go to a private, access-controlled store, are seen only by the reviewing editor, and are deleted once the decision is made. No identity number is ever displayed anywhere; the public sees only the badge. Review completes within 48 hours and a rejection always states its reason.

6. Corrections: how, and how fast

Nothing here is auto-moderated. Every report is read by a person, including on institution pages, which go out of date faster than anything else in the register.

7. What gets a listing changed or removed

There are three outcomes, and they are deliberately different weights:

  1. The badge comes off, the page stays. The evidence behind it went away, or the listing was put on hold pending a re-check. Being hard to verify is not a reason to delete a real business from the register — it is a reason not to vouch for it.
  2. Hidden. Temporarily off the site while something is checked.
  3. Blocked. Off for good, for a policy breach.

Hidden and blocked both mean gone from everywhere, not just from the listing page: the suppression list is applied to the category, locality and collection pages and is handed to the search page explicitly, because search renders its own copy of the register and would otherwise keep serving a listing that had been taken down.

A listing comes down when:

  • the business has permanently closed;
  • it duplicates another entry — the weaker record is merged into the stronger one and its old address permanently redirects, so nobody who bookmarked it lands on a dead page;
  • someone is impersonating a business, or the listing is spam or deliberately misleading;
  • it carries personal details of a private individual who has asked for them to be removed;
  • the content is offensive or unlawful;
  • the owner asks us to remove it. That request needs no reason.

And what never gets a listing removed or demoted: declining to pay for anything, refusing an enquiry, or complaining about us.

8. The money rules

  • We do not charge for the ✓ badge, and it cannot be bought at any price.
  • We do not charge businesses to rank higher in organic results, and we do not sell links.
  • We do not sell or rent contact details, and an enquiry from a listing goes straight to that business — there is no middleman collecting it.
  • We do not publish fake reviews or fabricated ratings, and we do not lock businesses into contracts.

Paid placement exists and is kept structurally separate from verification and from organic ordering, and anything sponsored is labelled as sponsored where it appears.

9. Who stands behind this

Kochi Directory is operated by Webstreax Private Limited, No. 24/1701, 2nd Floor, KC Arcade, Cochin Special Economic Zone, Kakkanad, Kochi, Kerala 682037. Grievances and privacy requests go to John Chrison Joy, our named Grievance Officer under the DPDP Act, at admin.kochidirectory@gmail.com. Disputes are governed by the laws of Ernakulam, Kerala, India.

There is no call centre and no helpline number — it is run by one person here in Kochi, so email is the whole support desk. That is also why nobody from here will ever cold-call you about your listing.
