Kalady is a census town and grama panchayat on the east bank of the Periyar river in Aluva taluk, about 40 km northeast of Kochi city and roughly 6 km from Cochin International Airport at Nedumbassery. It is known as the birthplace of the 9th-century philosopher Adi Shankara and as the seat of the Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, established there in 1993.
